1) Who is the artist?
Siu Pak Keung was born in Hong Kong. He graduated in the specialist courses of Hong Kong Visual Art Center (sculpture, ceramic and printmaking), Diploma of Chinese ink painting of School of Continuing and Professional Studies The Chinese University of Hong Kong. 'Gen Kan Workshop' is set up in Fo Tan.
Peter retired and started his 'art-life' together with his wife around six years ago. At the very beginning of his art-life, Peter tried to
learn making sculptural objects for two years. However, he later on discovers
that ink painting is his favorite hobby. That's why he is still concentrating in
this field and addicted to ink painting.
3) Why do you want to be an
contemporary artist?
Peter is inspired by Claude Monet who is a founder of French impressionist painting. Haystacks is the title of a series of impressionist painting by Claude Monet, which is known for its use of repetition to show differences in perception of light across various time of day. It inspires Peter a lot in painting styles and characters.
Peter's artwork is usually in the form of paper. Painting tools include brush, newspaper, soft and hard plastics plate etc. These tools react with ink to produce special effects and layering. Appreciators can obtain different views and feelings from just a piece of artwork when they are standing at different positions and angles.
6) Why do you like using
newspaper to add texture in your artwork?
Newspaper is a very good material to add texture and layering in the ink painting. When Peter squeezes the newspaper, it can create infinite possibilities and inspirations. Although it is a simple material, the natural shapes and patterns created are incredible. Apart from using newspaper, Peter has also used hard and soft plastic plate in ink painting. Tools can be found everywhere in his Fo Tan studio.
Peter says that usually the latest artwork is
his favorite artwork. Why? The mystery and break through brought by the new
artwork catches his eyes and absorbs him into it. Like his new artwork at the
moment, he is intended to play with the contrasting light and heavy.
Peter's artwork 'Dreams of cruising around the
country I-IIl' can reflect Hong Kong's current situation. The whole artwork
represents that Hong Kong harbor is becoming much narrower and only small lakes
are left due to reclamation these years.
The most difficult thing for Peter is to
express different ideas by keeping its own painting styles. Every individual
artist has his or her own character. Every stroke on the the painting is showing
their personality. How to keep the consistency? It is a huge problem that Peter
is facing.
10) What is your coming movement?
In the future, Peter will create a very enormous ink painting. It's size will be even lager than 247 cm x 123 cm (biggest size of his existing artwork). Various new skills will be put in the new artwork. Peter is looking forward to it.
hi! Cindy. thanks for sharing your favor artist. you state a very clear information list and allow me know more about him and his works. i also appreciate your typeset. you utilize the question-answer format to explain the essential element such as the background, experience and coming movement. that is a smart approach to exhibit your points. but one more thing is that i highly recommend you to add some pictures connecting his work or process of the activities.it is better to draw readers eyes. as well, you could optically attach a link to his official website which is convenient for the readers to look for further information. but to be frank, the list is good overall.
回覆刪除Thank you for your advice. I have just uploaded the interview video. If you are interested, you can take a look on it. In the video, Peter introduces his new artwork and explains the concept behind. Hope you enjoy it.
刪除Hi Cindy,
回覆刪除Thanks for sharing this new type of ink painting! I have been his workshop in Fo Tan, I found his artworks are very interesting and inspirable. As we know that ink painting is the traditional painting in China, he uses the new tools which are easy found in our daily life instead of the traditional painting pens to create the new type of artworks. It inspires me to observe more and think more in my daily life. From my point of view, u can focus more on his inspiration to you and your opinion to his artworks.
Best regards, Miti
I will take your advice and put it in my coming presentation.
刪除Thank you so much.
Hello! I am Carrie. I am interested in painting and Monet so I am curious of your discussion! About your artist, I think there are some different between Monet and Peter, what do you think about their pieces? Because you mentioned that Peter was inspired by Monet. But Monet's pieces are more colorful and bright, Peter's art work seems a little bit dark. Do you know the reason? (Because I have not been to his studio in Fotan so I don not know the detail, sorry!)
回覆刪除Also can you tell me about what is "New ink", what is different of the traditional and new ink? I just suggest, maybe it is not situable for your art review!
Thanks for your sharing!
Your comment is really useful for me.
刪除I will talk about the differences between traditional and new ink painting in the research presentation. Hope you can get a better understanding after it.
Hello, Cindy. This is Bonica!
回覆刪除Thanks for sharing such an interesting artist, Peter, who develops his own contemporary way of making ink paintings. Usually Chinese paintings are drawn by brushes with different levels moisture to shape the object with dots or lines. It is very creative of him to borrow the ideas from impressionists, using new medium like newspapers and plastic plates to make ink paintings. I am surprised to see that those patterns generated cohere with those in the nature.
I would like to know if Peter soaks newspapers in inks with different tones of black ink to create different atmosphere or to represent different elements. You got plenty of information collected from the interview but I suggest you adding your own options and the social background upon his creation to show your learning. I hope these might help!
Peter learnt making sculptural objects a few years ago. It inspires him to put a three-dimensional sense into his ink paintings. I will have a detail introduction in the coming presentation. Hope you can come and listen. Thank you.
刪除Hello! I am Phoebe. Your choice of artist and artworks look interesting and meaningful. Ink painting is a new thing to me. Your artist has made ink painting become even more interesting as he uses various painting tool such as brush, newspaper, soft and hard plastics plate.
回覆刪除Peter has expressed his concern about Hong Kong through artworks. For example, 'Dreams of cruising around the country I-IIl' shows that Hong Kong harbor is becoming narrower and only small lakes are left due to reclamation these years. Through artworks, more general public will be aroused and pay more attention to these issues.
I have the same feeling with you. Peter's artwork has a specific meaning behind. It reminds us that we should pay more attention in protection the natural environment. It is not only a piece of artwork.
刪除Hi, I am Stefan Kwan. While I reading you blog, I feeling very interesting as ink painting is famous as one of the traditional art in Chinese history. During the transformation of the whole world, it seems that many of the traditional items, skills, etc would lose in our lives and disappear forever. While watching your blog, it seems that here is come to a new style of ink painting, with a traditional skill of ink painting, with a new method of painting tools, this seems give a innovation towards ink painting and I think this is very important to some of the tradition art. Change to survive, art has also to change to survive and also to promote towards the public.
回覆刪除'Change to survive'....your opinions really impresses me a lot. May be traditional art really needs another way of presentation in the modern society.
刪除Ink painting is one of the most difficult kinds of art presentation in my point of view as it needs high level of techniques and it is not like western art that acrylic or oil painting can be covered if there is mistakes but the ink paintings allows no mistakes. Every brushes could not be erased once it is drawn and the control of strength must be carefully measured before painting on the medium. The artworks of you artist are really great and I appreciate his fineness that every brush is so accurate. It is also impressive to talk about nowadays social issues by the traditional art which is very interesting. I am looking forward to seeing his next artworks of enormous ink painting and I believe it would surely be a great and impressive piece.
回覆刪除I am also looking forward to Peter's new artwork! I think he is really talented. I hope I can also have such a good drawing skill like him. Haha..
刪除hi cindy, i am adam !!
回覆刪除it is an interesting artist since i dont understand any of his work, though his work is beautiful. i like the careful control of ink paintings strength.
if u can explain more on his work , i will understand more.
i reli dont understand the linkage between the ink coverage and the meaning behind.
plz ask the linkage and meaning of his works during the interview!
Actually, the interview is very long. I have divided the whole interview in several parts. I will also upload the other parts to the blog in the future. May be you can come again and have a look. I believe you will understand more about Peter's artwork.
刪除Hello, I am Li Xuan in the class GE1110. Wash painting is an old painting, and it is probably difficult to accept by modern people. In the last contrary, cartoon films in Chinese ink and water colours were very popular, but it did not stay long because of monotonous frames. In the artwork, I found that it is not the traditional Chinese wash painting. The artist uses brush, newspaper, soft or hard plastics plate and etc. Most of the tools are modern materials, which makes these pictures be more contemporary. These new materials create natural shapes and pattern, and have a different and brand new visual angle for appreciators. Peter can use the traditional Chinese art and add some new factors, and I think that it is good form to develop Chinese painting.
回覆刪除Hi. This is Vicky. Thanks for your sharing. Peter expresses the freedom of using a basic element in drawing, the Chinese ink did provide possibly in not only the form but also the abstract feeling of texture from 2D to 3D. He shows his interest on using Chinese ink. It’s nice that your blog included what his inspiration from and the relationship in terms of their style and characters. I think he plays the role of realizing his interest and dream into what he does. He does worth appreciate of his hardship on transforming the traditional into innovation.

Hi ,I am lau kong shing adam. First of all, I want to thank you for sharing this special artist’s information to us. Ink painting seems very hard, the control of spread of ink, deepness of color ,the coverage of the painting seems hard to control. However, the meaning behind is too hard to guess , because I think a pat of ink mean nothing to me... when u interview him ,may be u can ask him to explain the meaning behind he drawing and the linkage of the ink and meaning.
